EAT / DRINK / SEE

EAT

Eleven Madison Park

11 Madison Avenue
New York, New York

elevenmadisonpark.com

Have more than 3 hours to spare? Take a culinary stroll through Eleven Madison Park and its epic tasting menu. Daniel Humm’s restaurant is the gold standard of fine dining — which befits a space that was once a bank — and our favorite in New York. Little known secret, though: you can easily just grab a drink at the bar and order a few snacks for less than the regular price of admission!

Recommended: Everything

EAT

Olmsted

659 Vanderbilt Avenue
Brooklyn, New York

olmstednyc.com

The Farm-to-Table concept is so cliche, but not at Olmsted, which features inventive dishes by Alinea/Per Se/Blue Hill at Stone Barns/Atera alumnus, Greg Baxtrom, in a casual neighborhood setting. We suggest dinner in the dining room, followed by dessert and after-dinner drinks in the garden out back, complete with its own quail coop and crawfish bathtub. Yup, it’s definitely Brooklyn!

Recommended: Crawfish Boil Crackers, Vietnamese Squid Salad, Roasted Guinea Hen, Frozen Lavender-Honey Yogurt, Harbison Fondue

EAT

Prune

54 East 1st Street
New York, New York

prunerestaurant.com

Prune is the Chez Panisse of the East Coast, and Gabrielle Hamilton its Alice Waters. If you have time, read Hamilton’s beautifully-written memoir beforehand. If you don’t, just read the menu.

Recommended: Fried sesame shrimp toasts, braised beef tongue with salsa verde, grilled poussin (seasonal), “Ghost of Mary” cocktail

EAT

Mission Chinese Food

171 East Broadway
New York, New York

mcfny.com

Mission Chinese isn’t in Hell’s Kitchen, but it should be — Danny Bowien’s food here is hot, hot, hot and oh-so-tasty!

Recommended: Chongqing chicken wings, spicy peanut noodles, salt cod fried rice, “Phil Khallins” cocktail

EAT

Kang Ho Dong Baekjeong

1 East 32nd Street
New York, New York

baekjeongnyc.com

“Hey, Grill! It’s Meat.” And Baekjeong has some of the best — marinated Korean-style and cooked over an open flame by friendly servers who will not-so-subtly encourage you to do another shot of soju.

Recommended: Marinated short ribs, seafood soft tofu stew, soju

EAT

Babbo

110 Waverly Place
New York, New York

babbonyc.com

What was once an impossible reservation to get (unless you tried calling one month ahead and enjoyed busy signals and elevator music) is still a classic standby for all things pasta. Grab a seat at the bar — and, if you’re lucky like us, you may brush shoulders, literally, with George and Amal Clooney. And, if you can’t get in, Mario Batali’s other restaurant, Otto, is within walking distance.

Recommended: Bavette with ramps (seasonal), black spaghetti, mint love letters, olive oil cake and gelato
